  VOLUMETRIC WARE

Volumetric measurement is a routine task in the laboratory. The basic equipments used are Pipette, Volumetric Flasks and Measuring Cylinders.

  1. calibration of Measuring Equipment Proper use of calibrated volumetric glassware requires that the user be informed whether the ware is a "to contain" or "to deliver" vessel. Volumetric ware is Calibrated to deliver (Ex or TD) or to contain (In or TC) the stated volume. (The International standards Organisation for "to containis "In" and "todeliver,is"Ex") "Ex" Calibrated to deliver. The quantity of liquid deliverd corresponds to the volume indicated on the ware. E.g..pipette. "In" Calibrated to contain. The quantity of liquid contained corresponds to the volume printed on the ware. E.g..volumetric flasks, measuring cylinder.

  2. Accuracy Class "A" is the most accurate class. These items are marked with unique number and the certificate is issued. Class "B" volumetric glassware is intended to use for general purpose in laboratory.

    i) In case of water the edges are drawn slightly upward, forming a concave meniscus should just touch the graduation line

    ii) Incase of mercury a convex meniscus is formed. According to the International standards the volume should be read at the highest point of the liquid surface.i.e.the highest point of the meniscus should just touch graduation line.

    iii) When a Schell Bach strip is provided, the contracts into a an arrow shape at the meniscus. Due to the lens effect of the water column the line appears broad inside the water column. Both the narrow and board line meet at the meniscus in arrow shape. The meeting point of both the arrows is the read off point of the graduation mark.
